Garw Valley Highlands

From little acorns great oaks do grow...

Building a quality herd of Highland cattle (or fold) takes time, because as a breed, they mature slowly. Like great oaks. We started out building our fledgling fold back in 2012, with initially just three in-calf females. Since then, the fold has gradually increased to 36. In large part, this remarkable growth has been thanks to 'Moc of the May', a handsome black bull of excellent calm temperament, with good stature & conformation.

Moc was originally bred by Geoff Spawton of 'The May' fold. Geoff's farm is near Lampeter, in Ceredigion. Geoff's name will be familiar to some, as he's a well-respected figure in the Highland cattle community both in Wales & further afield. 'The May' is equally well known, as a Highland fold which has produced some of the finest quality show winning Highlands. Indeed, for many years Geoff was an active Highland Cattle Society fieldsman & show judge. Ten of Geoff's quality females were purchased in 2014 as foundation breeding stock for our own fold at Garw Valley Highlands.

To ensure we produce quality young stock in future years, all our breeding Highlands have been carefully selected & sourced from established folds with excellent reputations.

Our Breeding Successes.

Last year (2017) we welcomed eight new calves to the fold. This spring (2018) we've been delighted once again. Particularly as our three year old girls, bought in 2015 from Michael Summer's fold at Applecross Estate in Scotland - have borne calves for the very first time. We've seen 19 healthy new calves arrive in just two years, with eleven new additions this year so far, and two more barrel shaped cows looking 'imminent'. Calving season for us, is April to June. Its an exciting time of the year.

With the summer grasses growing tall in some of the fields, you need to watch you don't step on a snoozing baby !
